Bayer worker loses leg in train accident

A Bayer employee was seriously injured Friday morning after falling under a railcar at the Baytown plant.

Jeff Huntley called for assistance from Bayer’s emergency team around 8 a.m. The team immediately responded to the scene to render aid until Life Flight arrived, public affairs manager Cherie Laughlin said.

Huntley, who was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston for treatment, lost one leg as a result of the accident.

“We are deeply saddened when any employee suffers an injury of any severity, and we strive to learn from it to prevent a reoccurrence,” Laughlin said. “We have started our investigation into the cause of today’s incident. Right now we are focused on seeing that our employees and family receive the best of care.”

“Bayer’s Employee Assistance Program is being offered to our employees and to the family of the injured employee,” Laughlin said.

Laughlin said the investigation into what caused the accident is in its early stages, and any reasons given would be “speculation” at this point. The details of the incident are under investigation by a team of safety professionals, she said.

Huntley is a 1998 Ross S. Sterling High School graduate.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the employee and family a this time as we wait for a medical update,” said Steve Hedrick, head of operational security for Bayer. (By Kari Griffin)
